What if I have concerns with carrying to term?

You may be asking yourself questions such as “What will my child be like?” or “Can I do this?” The existence of a confirmed prenatal diagnosis often changes the perspective of a baby, but this is still the same child you conceived. Although their condition is now a part of his or her life, it isn’t who he or she is. You may grieve the loss of the baby for whom you had planned while still preparing to welcome this unique and wonderful child that will always be yours.

The experience with this child is likely different than what you can imagine. Each child is unique and your experience will be your own. The unknown future may seem scary, but know that others have gone down this path before you. Families in similar situations consistently say they would like to tell parents receiving a prenatal diagnosis “You can do this!”

You may also find comfort in meeting other families with a similar diagnosis to your own. We encourage you to look at the diagnosis-specific section of this website to learn the experiences of other families as well as discover support organizations available to you.
